Future Hall of Fame manager Terry Francona will reportedly come out of retirement to manage the Cincinnati Reds. According to sources cited by ESPN, the agreement comes one year to the day after his retirement as a Major League Baseball (MLB) manager.

Francona, aged 65, takes over a Reds team characterized by youthful talent. He steps into the role after leaving the Cleveland Guardians, whom he managed for the past 11 seasons. During his tenure with Cleveland, Francona achieved an impressive winning percentage of nearly 55%. Notably, he captured two World Series victories while managing the Boston Red Sox, including the historic 2004 campaign that ended an 86-year championship drought.

Concerns about Francona’s health have been prevalent in recent years, prompting him to step down from the Guardians on October 3, 2023. At the time, Francona cited health reasons and expressed uncertainty about returning to managing, stating, “I need to go home and get healthy and see what I miss about the game. I don’t foresee managing again.” His decision to return coincides with the Reds looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance this season.

In 2023, the Reds finished with a record of 77-85, marred by injuries, after a surprisingly competitive 82-80 finish the previous year. The organization subsequently fired manager David Bell, despite having extended his contract less than a year earlier. Francona’s appointment was first reported by MLB.com.

The Reds’ lineup presents considerable potential, boasting a roster that includes standout players such as a 22-year-old shortstop, and a solid position-player group. Additionally, the pitching staff is led by established talents, with promising rookies expected to bolster their performance next season.

Throughout his career, Francona has amassed 1,950 wins, beginning his managerial career over a quarter-century ago. With the Reds, he stands a strong chance to climb the ranks of all-time managerial wins, potentially surpassing legendary figures like Leo Durocher and Walter Alston.

Francona’s history with the Cincinnati Reds traces back to his own days as a major league outfielder. He played for the Reds during the 1987 season before retiring due to injuries. An official announcement regarding his appointment is anticipated soon.
