Texas Longhorns Football Offensive Line Struggles

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Longhorns football is searching for answers on its offensive line as they prepare to face No. 6 Oklahoma on Saturday in the Red River Rivalry. Following a disappointing 29-21 loss to Florida, the Longhorns are struggling with consistency, particularly at the left guard position, which has not been resolved since Hayden Conner entered the NFL.

This season, Connor Stroh, Neto Umeozulu, and true freshman Nick Brooks have all seen time at left guard, but none have performed consistently well. Pro Football Focus reports that their grades are below 65.0, indicating significant room for improvement.

On Thursday, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian stated that the coaching staff has considered moving senior center Cole Hutson to left guard, though he provided little detail on the matter. Hutson himself has experience as a guard, having started 13 games at right guard as a freshman.

“We’re always looking for consistency, regardless of the position,” Sarkisian explained. “That’s one of the base requirements of playing for us on offense, defense, or special teams.”

Umeozulu, who began the season as a possible starter at left guard, has fallen out of the rotation. Despite being regarded as a top recruit in his class, he has not seen significant playing time in recent weeks.

Brooks, weighing 349 pounds and standing at 6 feet 7 inches, made his debut at the position against Florida, but the maturation process is expected to come with challenges. Sarkisian indicated there would be growing pains as he shifts from tackle to guard.

Against a Sooners defense that ranks among the best nationally for total defense and rushing defense, the Longhorns must improve their offensive line performance. The Sooners allow only 74.6 rushing yards per game and have recorded 14 sacks in their last two contests.

The Longhorns aim for better execution on the ground, having faced a difficult time moving the ball against Florida, where they allowed six sacks and 35 quarterback pressures. Sarkisian noted that the team practiced well this week and understands the game plan.

“All signs point to we’re in a much better space this week than we were last week, but again, we have to go out and perform,” he said.

As the Longhorns gear up for their deep-seated rivalry game against Oklahoma, their offensive line’s ability to adapt will be crucial. The match is set to kick off Saturday at 2:30 PM CT at the Cotton Bowl.
