Texas RB Quintrevion Wisner Emerges as Key Player in College Football Playoff
ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Longhorns running back Quintrevion Wisner has become one of the unsung heroes of the 2024 college football season. After starting the year as the fourth-string tailback, Wisner has risen to lead the team in rushing, culminating in a 1,000-yard season as the Longhorns prepare to face Ohio State in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Friday.
Wisner’s journey to this point has been marked by resilience and determination. Despite playing primarily on special teams as a freshman, he seized his opportunity this season following injuries and performance issues among other running backs. His breakout performance came in a 17-7 victory over Texas A&M, where he rushed for 186 yards, the fourth-most by a Longhorn against the Aggies in program history.
“I’m gonna brag on this guy for a minute,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said of Wisner. “He might be the toughest guy on our team. He is cut from, I mean, a brillo pad. He is so tough, but at the same time, he’s one of the best teammates on our team.” Sarkisian praised Wisner’s work ethic, energy, and ability to uplift his teammates, qualities that have earned him immense respect in the locker room.
Wisner’s toughness is rooted in his upbringing. “Just goes back to the way I was raised,” he said. “Credit to my family, showing us the hard way and teaching us that if you want something, you have to work for it. Life shouldn’t be easy.” This mindset has propelled him through challenges, including playing through injuries like a broken wrist and a tooth through his lip.
As Texas prepares to face Ohio State, Wisner is no stranger to AT&T Stadium, having won a Texas UIL State Championship there with Desoto High School in 2021. “It’s definitely a blessing,” he said. “Being back at AT&T will be exciting.” The Buckeyes’ defense, known for its physicality and discipline, presents a formidable challenge, but Wisner remains confident. “We just lock in on the little details that we work on in practice,” he said.
The Longhorns enter the semifinal as underdogs, but Wisner’s emergence as a key offensive weapon has given Texas a fighting chance. With his combination of toughness, skill, and leadership, Wisner has become a symbol of the Longhorns’ resilience this season.
