ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers are hoping to welcome back outfielder Wyatt Langford as soon as this weekend after a stint on the 10-day injured list due to a right oblique strain.

Langford, who was sidelined for a week, is eligible to return on Saturday, following a rough 1-5 road trip for the Rangers. On Tuesday, manager Bruce Bochy announced that Langford would swing a bat before the game against the Oakland Athletics, a key step before his return.

“It sounds like a mundane step, but it’s a necessary one for him to be activated this weekend,” Bochy told reporters.

Langford left a game against the Chicago Cubs after striking out in the seventh inning. Before his injury, he had a productive game, hitting 2-for-4 with an RBI and a home run. He initially reported feeling tightness during his last plate appearance, and subsequent medical scans led to his placement on the injured list.

Currently, without Langford, the Rangers have used either Josh Smith or Kevin Pillar in left field. Langford started the season strong, hitting four home runs and driving in six runs in his first 12 games.

“He’s swinging the bat so well,” Bochy stated. “I’ve got to find a place for him in the lineup.”

In addition to Langford, the Rangers face decisions regarding their pitching staff as they manage injuries. Starter Jack Leiter, who is recovering from a blister, reported no issues after a recent simulated game, indicating he could soon rejoin the rotation. “It could be a rehab start, but we are not etching it in stone,” Bochy said.

As the Rangers prepare to face the Athletics, they look to improve their overall record of 13-9 and contend in the highly competitive American League West.
