ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers have fired offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker after a disappointing start to the 2025 season. The decision follows the team’s poor performance, which has left them ranked at the bottom of the league in offensive categories.

Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young announced the firing shortly after the team’s 8-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on April 28. This marked just the third game this season in which the Rangers scored eight or more runs.

“After lengthy discussions and deliberations, we feel now is the appropriate time to provide our hitters with a new voice as we pursue goals of winning the division and reaching the postseason,” Young said in a press release. He acknowledged Ecker’s contributions, including his role in the Rangers’ 2023 World Series championship, but indicated a shift was needed.

The Rangers offense entered the game against Seattle with a slash line of .224/.280/.357 and an 82 wRC+. Prominent players like Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia have underperformed significantly, and offseason signing Joc Pederson recorded a shocking 2 wRC+ through his first 91 plate appearances.

Despite having strong pitching, the team’s offensive struggles have been evident, resulting in an even record of 18-18. Young pointed out the team’s offensive issues have persisted, including being shut down multiple times and scoring three runs or fewer in ten of the last eleven games.

“We are evaluating all ways to get this offense going,” Young said prior to the game against Seattle. Manager Bruce Bochy, who values stability in coaching staff, is aware of the team’s emerging issues but believes in the process of coaching through slumps.

Bochy commented on the situation, saying, “I think we all do,” when asked if responsibility lies with Ecker and his staff for the offensive struggles. Lack of production has led to speculation about potential coaching changes, despite Bochy’s inclination not to act rashly.

It remains to be seen how the Rangers will address the coaching structure after Ecker’s departure, as they aim to reignite their offense and align their performance more closely with their expectations.
