Behren Morton Texas Tech Quarterback

LUBBOCK, TexasTexas Tech quarterback Behren Morton will be available only in an emergency role for the upcoming game against Arizona State, the school announced Thursday.

Morton, a redshirt senior, is dealing with an ankle injury sustained during a game against Kansas last week. He left the contest during the second quarter after an opposing player landed on his foot. The injury continues to limit his participation, though head coach Joey McGuire emphasized that Morton could step in if absolutely necessary.

While Morton recovers, redshirt freshman Will Hammond will start in his place. Hammond has appeared in all six games this season, accumulating 411 passing yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. He boasts a completion percentage of 66.7% and a passer rating of 143.4.

Texas Tech currently holds a perfect record of 6-0, including a 3-0 mark in the Big 12. The team is coming off a commanding 42-17 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks, where Morton was instrumental earlier in the season before his injury.

In his time on the field, Morton has thrown for 1,501 yards with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions this season, maintaining a passer rating of 175.6. His consistent performance had previously set high expectations for the Red Raiders this year.

As Texas Tech prepares for their matchup against Arizona State, both teams are eager to secure vital conference wins. The Sun Devils, currently 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play, are also returning their starting quarterback, adding another layer of competitiveness to the game.
