OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma – Texas Tech University scored a thrilling 4-3 victory over the University of Texas on June 5, 2025, equalizing the Women’s College World Series finals at one game apiece.

The win sends the series to a decisive Game 3, which will be held at 8 p.m. ET on June 6. This is the first time the championship series has reached a third game since 2021, and it marks a significant moment for both teams, as neither has previously claimed a national title.

In a tense game at Devon Park, Texas Tech jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Texas staged a late comeback attempt. The Red Raiders took the lead in the fifth inning when Alana Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Raegan Jennings to score. A wild pitch soon after allowed Mihyia Davis to cross home plate for the second run.

Texas responded with a solo homer from Mia Scott in the sixth, drawing within one run of Texas Tech’s lead. However, Canady struck out Kayden Henry with a runner on third to seal the win.

“We came out and played hard, and I really think the momentum is on our side going into tomorrow’s game,” said Texas Tech head coach. The Red Raiders had 12,220 fans in attendance, many coming to support their team, including alumni Patrick Mahomes II and his wife Brittany.

NiJaree Canady pitched a complete game, recording six strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs. She persevered through pressure spots, escaping two inning jams and proving essential to her team’s success.

For Texas, the loss came despite rallying efforts in the final inning, where they managed to score two runs, putting the tying run on second base before falling short.

The winner of Friday’s game will earn their first national championship in program history.
