Thripunithura Cricket Club Makes History with Formation of Maiden Women’s Team
Thripunithura Cricket Club (TCC) has etched its name in history by forming its first-ever women’s cricket team, marking a significant milestone in the club’s almost century-long legacy. Led by young talents like Neha R. Shenoy, who recently made the transition from badminton, the team comprises girls aged between 15 and 19, including State and district level players as well as newcomers to the sport.
The decision to establish the women’s team came after a group of 13 to 14 dedicated girls consistently attended training sessions over the past few months. Previously, TCC had only hosted an exhibition match featuring cricket legend Shantha Rangaswamy in 1975 during the International Women’s Year, as declared by the United Nations.
Kunal Viswam, the cricket in-charge at TCC, spearheaded the initiative to form the women’s team, providing them with coaching and access to the club’s facilities. Under the guidance of experienced coach Ramesh Chinnan, a former Kerala Ranji Trophy player, the team undergoes rigorous training six days a week, focusing on various aspects of the game from batting and bowling to fielding.
Practice sessions at TCC commence as early as 7.45 a.m. and continue till noon, with an afternoon session running from 2.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The team, consisting of both seasoned players and newcomers, collaborates to improve skills collectively, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment within the club.
Manasvi Potti, an established all-rounder who has represented the State in various age categories, expresses pride in being part of TCC’s inaugural women’s team. With the backing of cricket authorities like the Kerala Cricket Association and Ernakulam District Cricket Association, the team aims to seize every opportunity for growth and development in the sport.
