Oklahoma City Thunder Isaiah Hartenstein

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Sam Vecenie, a commentator on the Game Theory podcast, believes the Oklahoma City Thunder hold the strongest defense in the NBA, but their future is uncertain. Vecenie discussed the potential departure of center Isaiah Hartenstein with fellow podcaster Bryce Simon, noting financial challenges that could lead to his exit next summer.

“Oklahoma City, at least until they lose Hartenstein next offseason,” Vecenie said. “Unless he takes a massive discount, they could face a hefty tax bill if they retain him.” Hartenstein is projected to command upwards of $25 million on the open market. He has been a crucial part of the Thunder’s defensive strategy, effectively elevating their performance.

Along with Lu Dort and Jalen Williams, Hartenstein has contributed significantly to the Thunder’s defensive success. However, his expertise might come at a cost. Vecenie believes the team may not be able to afford him and could face similar issues that the Boston Celtics encountered this summer, as they let key players go to manage their payroll.

Hartenstein’s departure would leave the Thunder searching for a new big man, as they aim to maintain their competitive edge. Thunder management is aware of the implications of losing such an impactful player.

In a different turn of events, the Thunder also cut ties with Dillon Jones this summer after just one season. They traded five second-round picks to acquire him and anticipated he would fit well alongside their core. Instead, Jones struggled offensively, shooting 38.3 percent from the field and 25.4 percent from three-point range.

Despite his skill set, Jones could not translate his potential into a role that complemented the Thunder’s superstars, leading to his release. He was subsequently signed by the Washington Wizards, who later waived him, leaving Jones’s future in jeopardy.

As the Thunder prepare for the upcoming season, they must navigate these challenges, deciding if they can afford to keep Hartenstein while looking for strength in the roster to continue their pursuit of a championship.
