Oklahoma City Thunder Nba Playoffs Action

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Four teams have now advanced to the second round of the NBA Playoffs, joining the Oklahoma City Thunder. The upcoming Game 6 in the matchup between the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers, scheduled for tonight, could determine the Thunder’s next opponent. Currently, the Nuggets lead the series 3-2.

The Thunder excelled in their first-round series against the Memphis Grizzlies, but have areas to improve upon. A standout performance came from Alex Caruso, leading to discussions about whether he should start in the second round. This season, Caruso averaged 7.1 points with shooting percentages of 44.6% from the field and 35.3% from behind the arc. He also contributed 2.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.2 steals per game. While his scoring remained steady in the playoffs, his defensive game sharply improved, with playoff averages of 4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 3.1 steals.

Against the Grizzlies, the Thunder utilized a double-big man strategy by starting Isaiah Hartenstein to match Memphis’s size. This approach was somewhat successful but came with drawbacks, slowing their start in some games. If Caruso were to start, the Thunder could adopt a five-out offensive strategy, allowing more driving space for players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams. Though Caruso isn’t as effective a passer as Hartenstein, he serves as an important connecting piece. Moreover, his defensive prowess could allow the team to switch defensively more effectively with both him and Luguentz Dort on the court.

However, one concern with inserting Caruso into the starting lineup is the potential loss of size in rebounding. Last year, the Thunder struggled in that area, which became a drawback in the playoffs. While they showed improvement this season with Hartenstein, relying solely on smaller lineups against larger teams could be problematic. Additionally, while Caruso has been effective closing out games, his high energy output, particularly on defense, may limit his minutes. Therefore, it might be more beneficial for him to remain a key player from the bench.

The Thunder aim to reach the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2016. Despite Caruso’s commendable performance in the previous round, many believe the benefits of him coming off the bench outweigh the advantages of starting. The decision on the lineup will ultimately hinge on who the Thunder face next, with a preference for Hartenstein to start if they meet the Nuggets.

As they await their next opponent, the Thunder remain focused on their goal of winning the NBA Finals.
