Thunder Prepare for NBA Playoffs with Extra Time Off

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Oklahoma City Thunder are embracing a key mantra as they prepare for the NBA playoffs: “The times in between the games are the days that you have to win in the playoffs,” said guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Thunder secured the Western Conference’s top seed for the second consecutive year and are now waiting to face either the Denver Nuggets or the LA Clippers.
Historically, the Thunder have shown that lengthy breaks do not hinder their performance. After a six-day layoff between their regular-season finale and Game 1 against the Memphis Grizzlies, they won the opener and went on to sweep the series. Last season, a similar break preceded their playoff series against the New Orleans Pelicans, which they also won.
“We’ll always take it,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said, referring to the extra time off. “It’s good, obviously, physically, to rejuvenate… We’re going to need to replicate that this week as we wait for that other series to finish.”
The Thunder have utilized this downtime effectively, encouraging their players to stay sharp through practice and scrimmages. Big man Chet Holmgren noted the importance of intense practices while avoiding physical strain.
Defense has been a critical aspect of the Thunder’s success. They led the league in defensive efficiency during the regular season and solidified their status by sweeping the Grizzlies with a remarkably low defensive rating.
Gilgeous-Alexander recognized the potential risks of having too many days off but remains optimistic about their preparation. “It could add a little rust, or it could add a little freshness,” he said. Additionally, the Thunder’s depth allows them to rotate players, ensuring that fatigue is less of a concern.
As they await their next opponent, the Thunder are focused on maintaining their rhythm and intensity. Coach Daigneault believes that experience preparing for playoffs is invaluable, stating, “I think we made some progress from last year to this year in terms of our process.”
