OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Oklahoma City Thunder have converted rookie guard Ajay Mitchell from his two-way contract to a standard NBA deal, the team announced Thursday. The move comes despite Mitchell being sidelined with a turf toe injury that could keep him out for the remainder of the regular season.
Mitchell, the 38th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, signed a two-year contract worth $6 million, according to his agents Todd Ramasar and Mike Simonetta. The Thunder utilized a portion of their room exception to complete the signing, ensuring Mitchell will be eligible for postseason play if he recovers in time.
The 22-year-old guard was a standout performer for the Thunder before his injury, averaging 6.4 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 16.5 minutes per game over 34 appearances. He also posted an impressive shooting line of .506/.431/.848, showcasing his efficiency on the court.
“Ajay has been a key part of our rotation this season,” said a Thunder spokesperson. “While his injury is unfortunate, we believe in his potential and want to ensure he’s ready to contribute if he returns this season.”
Mitchell underwent surgery last month and is expected to be reevaluated in 10-to-12 weeks. The Thunder’s decision to promote him now, rather than wait, eliminates the 50-game NBA limit for two-way players and secures his eligibility for the playoffs.
The Thunder created roster space by waiving a recently acquired player, allowing them to finalize Mitchell’s promotion without additional moves. The team, currently leading the Western Conference, continues to build for both the present and future.
