Thunder One Win Away from NBA Championship After Game 5 Victory

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Oklahoma City Thunder are one win away from clinching their first NBA title in franchise history after defeating the Indiana Pacers 120-109 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday night.
Jalen Williams led the Thunder with a playoff-career-high 40 points, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander contributed 31 points, four blocks, and 10 assists. The victory gave Oklahoma City a 3-2 series lead, putting them on the brink of winning the championship.
In front of a home crowd, the Thunder dominated the court, especially on defense, forcing 22 turnovers from the Pacers. This pressure contributed significantly to their win, as their defense limited Indiana to just 33 percent shooting.
The Pacers faced challenges in Game 5, particularly with the performance of Tyrese Haliburton, who is dealing with a strained right calf. Haliburton scored only four points, marking his lowest playoff total. His health will be crucial as the series progresses, especially heading into the vital Game 6 on Thursday.
“If I can walk, then I want to play,” Haliburton said, emphasizing his determination to contribute despite the injury. The Pacers have shown resilience throughout the playoffs, but their chances may dwindle without Haliburton at full strength.
Experts have offered insights on Indiana’s potential paths to victory in Game 6, stressing the need for a strong performance and strategic management of turnovers and scoring.
“Indiana has to control the pace of the game,” said Tim MacMahon, an NBA insider. “They need to limit turnovers and support Haliburton. Otherwise, it’s a tall order against a team as strong as the Thunder.”
As the series heads back to Indiana, the Pacers remain hopeful that they can force a Game 7. Players like Pascal Siakam and TJ McConnell will have critical roles in making that happen.
Game 6 is set for Thursday at 7:30 p.m. CT at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
