Tigers Activate Catcher Jake Rogers, Designate Tomás Nido

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Detroit Tigers activated catcher Jake Rogers from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday and designated catcher Tomás Nido for assignment.
Rogers, 30, has missed the last 38 games after being placed on the injured list with a strained left oblique on April 8. He recently completed a brief rehab assignment at Triple-A, where he batted .333 with three doubles in 15 at-bats.
During Rogers’ absence, Nido stepped in and filled the role effectively, hitting .343 with 12 hits in 37 at-bats over 10 games. However, all of Nido’s hits were singles, and his high batting average on balls in play is unsustainable.
The decision to designate Nido comes as the Tigers seek to streamline their roster. If Nido clears waivers after being designated, he can opt for free agency or stay in the Tigers’ organization, providing depth at Triple-A Toledo.
While Nido is a skilled defender, he entered the season with a career batting line of .210/.245/.309, raising concerns over his long-term viability as a backup. The Tigers have five days to trade him before he is placed on outright waivers.
Rogers’ return is seen as a boost for the Tigers, as he previously showcased the power potential with 21 home runs last season. His strong defensive skills will also be crucial as the team moves forward in the season.
