Detroit Tigers Outfield Players In Action

DETROIT, Mich. — As the Detroit Tigers prepare for the 2025 MLB season, the team’s plans for center field remain uncertain amid injuries affecting key outfield players. With three outfielders sidelined, Javier Báez has begun taking practice reps in center, hoping to fill the gap as the season opener approaches.

The Tigers’ organization had hoped to assign Báez primarily to left field, where he has been most effective. Over the past three seasons, he has played 189 games in center field, including 21 games in 2024. However, with injuries to several teammates, the team’s strategy may shift significantly.

A newly signed outfielder, whose fit is still under discussion, could see time in the lineup, particularly against left-handed pitching. Despite the potential he brings, management has indicated that he may be better suited as a corner outfielder and not equipped for a primary role at this point in his career.

“We’re working to put the right pieces in place while some of our players are sidelined,” said Tigers coach A.J. Hinch. “Javier is an experienced player, and he’s shown he can adapt to different positions. We trust his abilities to help keep our outfield competitive.”

As the Tigers navigate this early-season challenge, they will continue to assess their roster and make necessary adjustments. The move to include Báez in center field could be temporary, depending on how quickly other outfielders recover.

This situation is not unique to Detroit; many teams are grappling with injuries as they kick off the 2025 season. However, the Tigers’ decision to utilize Báez in a new role shows their commitment to maintaining a strong lineup.
