Detroit Tigers Gleyber Torres Injury Update

DETROIT, Mich. – The Detroit Tigers are aiming for a successful 2025 MLB season after an unexpected playoff run last year. However, the team faces challenges, including the recent injury of key second baseman Gleyber Torres, who is recovering from an oblique strain.

Torres, who joined the Tigers on a one-year, $15 million contract from the New York Yankees this offseason, has only appeared in two games due to the injury sustained during the opening series of the season. As the team continues its campaign, there is hope he could return as early as this weekend, subject to further evaluation.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch commented on Torres’ progress, stating, “We haven’t determined exactly if he’s going to need a rehab stint. He’s been doing high-velocity work off a machine.” The team is closely monitoring Torres, whose performance this season is crucial not only for the Tigers’ playoff aspirations but also for his chances at securing a more lucrative contract in the future.

Despite Torres’ absence, the Tigers have started the season with a commendable 7-5 record. They made it to the American League Division Series (ALDS) last year, where they ultimately fell to the Cleveland Guardians. In that series, the Tigers showcased their talent, led by AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. So far this season, Skubal has yet to find his form, but his continued improvement could help solidify the Tigers’ already formidable roster.

“We’re not relying solely on Tarik. We have a solid team that can compete,” Hinch noted. Key contributors, including Spencer Torkelson, Riley Greene, and Kerry Carpenter, will be essential in maintaining the Tigers’ competitive edge within the AL Central division, particularly as three teams reached the playoffs last season.

Greene, an All-Star last year, alongside Torkelson, a former first overall draft pick, adds depth to the lineup. However, the Tigers may need to consider trades to strengthen their roster further if they aim for a World Series run this year. As the season unfolds, Detroit fans remain hopeful that the return of Torres will play a pivotal role in their ambitions.
