DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers made significant roster changes on Friday, optioning infielder Andy Ibáñez to Triple-A Toledo and calling up utility man Jahmai Jones.

Ibáñez, 32, has struggled in his third season with the team, hitting just .118 in the past month. He was primarily the club’s right-handed hitting utility man, but his recent performance led to this decision.

“It was an encouraging message to Andy to go get yourself some at-bats and get right,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “We need the good version of Andy to combat some of the moves the other side makes.”

The Tigers selected Jones’ contract from Toledo to fill Ibáñez’s spot. Jones, 27, showed promise during spring training, competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster. He has played in short stints with teams such as the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, and Baltimore Orioles.

In his time with Toledo in 2025, Jones has had a solid performance, hitting .276 with an .875 OPS and six home runs in 205 plate appearances. His versatility allows him to play multiple positions, primarily in the outfield.

“He can really hit. He makes good decisions and comes with some thump, athleticism, and speed,” Hinch noted. “He fits the exact role we’re going to play him in.”

To make room for Jones on the 40-man roster, outfielder Akil Baddoo was designated for assignment after going 2-for-17 during his recent stint with the Tigers. Baddoo’s prospects for remaining in the organization could depend on his performance in waivers.

This change comes as the Tigers continue to build their roster, looking to compete in a challenging season. They hope Ibáñez can regain form in Toledo, while Jones adds depth to the roster moving forward.
