Tigers Seek Series Win Against Yankees After Strong Start

DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Tigers aim to clinch their three-game series against the New York Yankees on Tuesday after securing a 4-1 victory in the series opener at Comerica Park. The win marked Detroit’s fourth consecutive victory and solidified their perfect record at home this season.
Casey Mize delivered an impressive performance, marking his first quality start of the season with six innings of work. He allowed just one earned run on four hits and three walks, striking out six batters, and earned his first win of the year.
The game’s turning point came from a three-run homer by Andy Ibañez, which proved pivotal as the Tigers’ bullpen allowed only one more run in the latter innings. Manager A.J. Hinch expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance: “The energy was great, and we executed our game plan well,” he said following the win.
Looking ahead, the Tigers will send ace Tarik Skubal (0-2, 5.91 ERA) to the mound in hopes of closing out the series against Yankees right-hander Carlos Carrasco (1-0, 7.36 ERA). Skubal has faced challenges early this season, struggling in his first two outings where he has failed to finish the fifth inning.
“It’s been a rough start for sure, but I’m focusing on each pitch and trusting my stuff,” Skubal said. His last appearance showed signs of improvement, as he struck out eight batters, although he surrendered three runs, including a home run.
On the other hand, Carrasco has had his own difficulties this season. After lasting only two innings against the Baltimore Orioles while conceding three runs, he managed to improve slightly in his last start against the Toronto Blue Jays, where he pitched 5 1/3 innings with three runs allowed.
The matchup at Comerica Park is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET. Both teams will look to capitalize on their starting pitchers’ performances as they vie for the series win. Hinch is hopeful that Skubal can find his rhythm: “We have faith in Tarik. He’s capable of turning things around quickly.”
