Tigers Opening Day Comerica Park

DETROIT, Mich. — After a challenging start to the 2025 MLB season, the Detroit Tigers are ready to host their home opener against the Chicago White Sox on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Comerica Park. The game, which marks the team’s first appearance at home this season, is set for 1:10 p.m.

The Tigers (2-4) are coming off a difficult West Coast road trip that began with a loss against last year’s champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers. They managed to secure two wins against the Seattle Mariners before heading home. The season opener was challenging due to poor performance in crucial moments, including a significant error in the second inning of the Dodgers game.

Starting for the Tigers will be Jack Flaherty (0-0, 3.18 ERA), who is making his second stint with the team. He first joined the franchise as a free agent in December 2023 and, after a brief trade to the Dodgers, returned to Detroit on February 7 after contributing to their World Series victory.

The White Sox counter with Jonathan Cannon (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who showcased a strong performance in his debut, pitching five scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels. This matchup is anticipated to be a critical one for both teams, who are currently tied in the American League Central division.

As fans gather at Comerica Park, they will notice some changes around the stadium. One significant alteration is the removal of the ‘Tigers’ script from the scoreboard, which has been replaced with a ‘Comerica Park’ sign. This shift returns to the ballpark’s original branding and aims to reflect its heritage.

Additionally, the dirt strip known as the ‘keyhole’ between the pitcher’s mound and home plate has been officially removed, marking the first major field change since the park opened in 2000. Nonetheless, the beloved tiger statues remain in place, continuing to symbolize the team’s identity.

Fans arriving early can enjoy pregame festivities, including live music and tailgates, which will enhance the vibrant atmosphere typical of Opening Day. The weather is cooperative: clear skies with temperatures around 45 degrees are expected, though clouds and rain are projected later in the evening.

The Tigers will be without several key players, including second baseman Gleyber Torres, outfielders Parker Meadows and Matt Vierling, and pitcher Alex Cobb, who are currently recovering from injuries. Torres is on the 10-day injured list due to a left oblique strain suffered last Friday. Utility player Ryan Kreidler and outfielder Manuel Margot have stepped up in their absence, with Margot boasting a solid .385 batting average so far this season.

Parking for the game can be reserved in advance, and several shuttle services are available from key downtown locations. Fans are encouraged to utilize these options to avoid road closures around the stadium due to ongoing construction.

Opening Day festivities will kick off with player introductions at 12:35 p.m., followed by a National Anthem performance by Grammy Award-winner Brian d’Arcy James. Notable celebrity Keegan-Michael Key will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, accompanied by a military flyover featuring A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft.

With upgraded concessions showcasing local favorites, including offerings from Slow’s Bar BQ, fans can enjoy a unique culinary experience while cheering for their team. This year, Comerica Park promises a lively occasion filled with excitement and tradition.
