Tarik Skubal Pitching For Detroit Tigers

LAKELAND, Fla. — Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal is embracing the challenge of continuing his success after winning the 2024 Cy Young Award. In his last spring training outing, Skubal chose to play against the Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota instead of the New York Yankees at home. His decision exhibited his competitive spirit, as he faced a stronger lineup that included Adley Rutschman.

“I like competing,” Skubal said after the impressive performance where he allowed only one run over six innings while striking out nine batters. “It brings out the best in me when you see familiar names and know the scouting reports like it’s a normal game.”

Manager A.J. Hinch humorously remarked on Skubal’s decision, noting he would prefer to skip the long drives between games in Florida. However, Skubal relishes the competition that comes with facing established players. “He told me he wants to travel every (spring) start,” Hinch said, indicating Skubal’s determined mindset.

Skubal, who led the American League with 18 wins, a 2.39 ERA, and 228 strikeouts last season, is aiming for more than just a repeat performance. Despite the accolades, he acknowledges the mental battle of sustaining success in a sport characterized by its unpredictability.

“Nobody cares about last season. Not one guy in here cares,” Skubal said candidly, recognizing the urgency to start fresh and remain effective. “I want to throw 200 innings this season,” he added, aiming to be among the elite pitchers.

The Tigers organization views Skubal as a cornerstone for the future, yet they face a potential dilemma as he approaches free agency. Skubal’s agents at Boras Corporation appear poised to leverage his growing status, complicating decisions for the team. The Tigers have control over him for two more seasons, and how they handle his contract could influence the franchise’s direction.

“I’ll let my agents handle the business,” Skubal said, deflecting questions about his future. “My priority is competing well and being healthy.”

Reflecting on past struggles, Skubal remembers a grand slam hit against him that capped the Tigers’ postseason hopes last year. “I think everyone got a taste of it. I think you become addicted to that taste,” Skubal said, expressing his desire for the Tigers to return to the playoffs.

As he prepares to embark on the 2025 season, Skubal is not just focused on personal accolades but on leading Detroit to greater heights. “I’m not happy just to be here and show up. I’m here to try to win,” he insisted, emphasizing a mentality to strive for excellence.

Opening Day will see Skubal on the mound for the Tigers against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers, a critical moment that can set the tone for his season and the team’s ambitions.
