Tim Tszyu to Face Sebastian Fundora for Unified World Titles in Vegas Showdown
Tim Tszyu has the opportunity to follow in his father’s legendary footsteps as he gears up for a historic showdown in Las Vegas, with the stakes raised significantly for his long-awaited debut in the city of lights.
Shortly after Australian boxer Tim Tszyu’s planned bout against Keith Thurman was canceled due to Thurman’s injury, officials announced that American fighter Sebastian Fundora would step in as the replacement on March 30 at T-Mobile Arena.
This turn of events now transforms the highly anticipated non-title fight into a battle for unified world titles, with Tim Tszyu putting his WBO super-welterweight belt on the line while also challenging Fundora for the WBC strap.
This significant opportunity for Tim Tszyu comes 25 years after his father Kostya Tszyu captured the WBC super-lightweight title in Miami by defeating Miguel Angel Gonzalez, following his previous IBF title win in 1997.
After Keith Thurman pulled out of the fight due to a bicep injury, Team Tszyu faced setback until No Limit Boxing’s George Ross secured the replacement bout against Sebastian Fundora, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown between the undefeated Australian and the towering American.
Nicknamed the ‘Towering Inferno’, Fundora was originally scheduled to face Serhii Bohachuk for the vacant WBC super-middleweight belt on the same card in Vegas before stepping into the main event against Tszyu.
Fundora previously held the interim WBC super-welterweight title but lost it to Brian Mendoza in Arizona last year, while Tszyu secured a unanimous points decision victory over Mendoza in a standout performance on the Gold Coast in 2022.
With the new bout between Tszyu and Fundora now set to headline the event, it presents a unique challenge for Tszyu as he aims to add another title to his collection and etch his name alongside his father’s in the world of boxing history.
The reshuffled fight card also features other exciting matchups, including Rolando Romero vs. Isaac Cruz for the WBA 140-Pound World Title and Erislandy Lara vs. Michael Zerafa for the WBA 160-Pound World Title, promising a night of top-tier boxing action in Las Vegas.
Speaking about the unexpected turn of events, No Limit CEO George Rose expressed confidence in Tszyu’s ability to rise to the challenge of facing Fundora on short notice, highlighting the significance of the opportunity presented by the dual-title fight.
