Timberwolves’ Naz Reid Clashes with Heckler in Heated Memphis Game
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid found himself in a heated exchange with a heckler during Monday night’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies, a confrontation that escalated as tensions flared in the final minutes of the closely contested matchup.
The incident occurred with 2:49 remaining in the fourth quarter, after Reid committed a turnover and was subsequently called for a foul. As Jaren Jackson Jr. prepared to shoot free throws, a fan seated courtside began taunting Reid, shouting, “Hey, you mad? Hey, you mad, buddy? We don’t care about you being mad!” Reid, visibly frustrated, turned to the fan and responded, “I’ll smack the sh*t outta you.”
The fan, identified as Charles Mabry, a local real estate investor known for provoking opposing players, continued to egg Reid on, yelling, “Yeah, come on with it then! Try me, buddy!” Mabry later posted videos of the exchange on his TikTok account, where he has gained notoriety for similar interactions with visiting players.
Despite the distraction, Reid delivered a standout performance, scoring a game-high 28 points off the bench, including five three-pointers. However, his efforts weren’t enough to secure a win for the Timberwolves, who fell 108-106 to the Grizzlies. The loss dropped Minnesota to a 22-21 record, adding pressure as they aim to regain momentum in the season.
Memphis fans, known for their intensity, created a hostile environment for the Timberwolves throughout the game. Mabry’s antics are part of a broader trend in the NBA, where courtside hecklers often attempt to rattle opposing players. “It’s part of the game,” Reid said postgame. “You just have to stay focused and not let it affect your play.”
The Timberwolves will look to bounce back in their next game, which will be nationally televised on ESPN. Reid’s performance, despite the loss, highlighted his growing importance to the team as they navigate a challenging stretch of the season.
