Kentucky Basketball Player Rob Dillingham In Action

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Minnesota Timberwolves made headlines during the 2024 NBA Draft by trading their 2031 first-round pick and a 2030 first-round pick swap to the Chicago Bulls to secure the No. 8 overall selection. With that pick, they selected Kentucky point guard Rob Dillingham, a dynamic 6-foot-1 player known for his scoring prowess.

This bold move raised eyebrows across the league, particularly given Dillingham’s rocky start with the Timberwolves, which included multiple did-not-play (DNP) designations. However, recent performances suggest the Timberwolves might have found a hidden gem in the young player.

Since transitioning into a more prominent role on the team, Dillingham has averaged 8.4 points per game over the last ten outings, shooting an impressive 51%. He is also contributing with 3.5 assists, 1.7 steals, and a half steal per game. Notably, he has converted 45% of his three-point attempts during this span, showcasing his potential to stretch the floor.

In a recent crucial victory against the Houston Rockets, Dillingham played 13 minutes off the bench, scoring six points on a 3-for-5 shooting performance. While his contributions may not have been game-changing, they represent a significant boost to a Timberwolves backcourt that lacks depth.

Timberwolves coach Chris Finch expressed optimism regarding Dillingham’s progress, stating, “Rob has shown flashes of what we believed he could become. His ability to create and score puts pressure on defenses and opens up our offense.”

Scouting reports highlight Dillingham’s high ceiling, attributed to his excellent scoring capabilities and his capable slashing to the basket. His willingness to pass and shoot with confidence further elevates his value as a young prospect. “He has a toolkit that can translate well to the NBA,” said an evaluator familiar with Dillingham’s game.

The Timberwolves are set to face the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT, where fans will be watching closely to see if Dillingham can continue to build on his recent successes.

The 2024 NBA Draft continues to shape the future of the Timberwolves, and with players like Dillingham, the team’s prospects are looking brighter.
