Titans Sign Veteran Edge Rusher Lorenzo Carter Amid Defensive Overhaul

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have signed veteran edge rusher Lorenzo Carter as part of their defensive overhaul this offseason, the team announced Thursday. Carter, a third-round draft pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, brings reputable experience after spending four years with the New York Giants and two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.
At 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 265 pounds, Carter has played in 96 career games, including 62 starts. He has accumulated 278 tackles, 21.5 sacks, and 35 tackles for loss, along with 18 passes defensed, five forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.
Last season, Carter played 13 games, earning 11 starts while with the Falcons but did not record any sacks, raising questions about his performance. Nevertheless, he made his mark during the 2022 season, becoming one of only five players to score multiple non-offensive touchdowns with an interception return and a blocked punt return, showcasing his versatility as a defensive player.
Initially drafted by the Giants, Carter started 49 games in four seasons, accruing 149 tackles and 14.5 sacks. His college career at Georgia saw him participate in 54 games where he totaled 166 tackles and demonstrated an ability to force turnovers with six forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.
Carter’s signing represents the Titans’ commitment to enhancing their pass rush. He becomes the tenth free agent added by the team during this offseason, joining a list that includes offensive linemen Dan Moore Jr. and Kevin Zeitler, receiver Van Jefferson, linebacker Cody Barton, and safety Xavier Woods.
The Titans are looking to solidify their defensive line after releasing notable defensive player Harold Landry III in early March. Adding depth to their pass rush has been prioritized, especially considering the team’s struggles last season regarding sack and pressure rates.
“We’re excited to bring Lorenzo into the mix,” said Titans General Manager Ran Carthon. “His experience and skillset will help us improve in key areas as we move forward.”
With Carter now onboard, the Titans hope to bolster their defense and improve performance ahead of the upcoming NFL season.
