MONTREAL — Brothers Brady and Matthew Tkachuk are savoring a unique opportunity to play together for Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off, kicking off Thursday night against Finland. This marks their first chance to share a locker room since they played together in the 2023 NHL All-Star Game, and both are excited about the bond and the competitive spirit they bring to the ice.
“So many funny things that have happened so far,” Matthew Tkachuk said. “We’ve talked about this moment, playing together, forever. And now that it’s finally happening, it’s just been amazing and we’re super grateful for it. We’re just having so much fun.” The Tkachuks, who normally compete against each other in the NHL, are thrilled to combine their talents on the international stage.
The two brothers have enjoyed their time in Montreal, celebrating the tournament with teammates, sharing meals, and reliving memories from their junior hockey days. “Just getting to see him all the time, just take advantage of being together,” Brady said. “We said this at the start, I think this week and a half will be some of the most laughs that we’ll ever have.”
Both Brady and Matthew bring their competitive nature to Team USA, emphasizing the importance of teamwork. Coach Mike Sullivan praised their contributions. “When you look at the group of players that we’ve assembled here, I think we have size, speed, skill, and will,” Sullivan said. “They’re fierce competitors and can adapt to the game’s needs, whether it’s speed, skill, or sheer determination.”
Reflecting on his brother’s capabilities, Matthew Tkachuk is particularly proud of Brady’s potential to shine during the tournament. “Everyone should be really excited to see what he’s going to bring to these games,” Matthew said. “He’s going to be great. I think it’s going to be kind of his coming out party to the hockey world.”
Growing up under the shadow of their father, Keith Tkachuk, a celebrated U.S. player, has shaped the brothers’ approach to the game. They cherish the opportunity to represent their country together, a dream they have held since childhood. “It is such an honor being able to be on a team that says United States of America,” Matthew said. “We haven’t had the opportunity to do this. I haven’t had the opportunity to do this in nine years, so I’ve really been looking forward to it.”
The tournament features other hockey powerhouses like Canada, Sweden, and Finland, all vying for the championship. Brady adds that the competitive edge they both carry will be instrumental in their gameplay. “There’s a lot of guys that have that competitive edge,” Brady said. “For me, I think that’s what kind of makes me, me, is being able to play that way and play intensely.”
As the Tkachuks prepare for the first game, they are grateful for the opportunity to combine efforts not only as teammates but as brothers. Forward Jack Eichel recognizes the unique blend of skills they bring to Team USA. “They bring so many elements to your team. It’s awesome to have them, and it’s got to be such a cool experience for them as well to be able to play with your brother,” Eichel said.
Matthew reiterated the excitement shared among the team members, stating, “It’s so cool to be doing this with him, sharing this experience. We just can’t wait for puck drop because that’s when it’s really going to be special.” The match against Finland will take place tonight at Bell Centre, marking the start of an exciting tournament for the Tkachuk siblings and Team USA.
