Toluca Ends 15-Year Title Drought with Victory Over America

TOLUCA, Mexico — Toluca ended a 15-year title drought by defeating Club América 2-0 in the Liga MX Clausura 2025 final at Estadio Nemesio Diez on Sunday. The victory secured the team’s eleventh championship title and thwarted América’s hopes for an unprecedented fourth consecutive title.
Antonio ‘Turco’ Mohamed, the Toluca coach, celebrated his fourth championship with a different team, matching records set by notable figures in Mexican football.
The match kicked off with high intensity but no goals in the first half. Israel Reyes nearly gave América the lead in the 27th minute, but his shot hit the post. Within moments, the momentum shifted as Toluca ramped up their offensive play.
In the second half, the match changed significantly. América’s Henry Martín was forced to leave the game due to injury, opening space for Toluca to capitalize. The breakthrough came in the 62nd minute when Luan García scored off a corner kick from Alexis Vega, prompting a euphoric reaction from the home crowd.
Shortly after, Toluca came close to extending their lead, but Robert Morales’ header struck the crossbar. The decisive moment arrived when a foul by Sebastián Cáceres on Morales led to a penalty kick, which Vega converted in the 79th minute, sealing the victory.
With this win, Toluca became the third most successful team in Liga MX history, now only one title behind Chivas. Meanwhile, this marked the eleventh final loss for América, highlighting a tough road for the team despite their strong season.
