Toluca’s Paulinho Emphasizes Winning Over Revenge Against America

CD. DE MÉXICO — Toluca forward Joao Paulo Dias Fernandes, commonly known as Paulinho, emphasized that his team’s upcoming match against Club América on Saturday is more about solidifying their positive momentum than avenging their previous playoff elimination.
In a press conference, Paulinho stated, “Revenge? No, I don’t believe that is the case. We want to win. Revenge is not the focus,” reflecting on the team’s intent to secure a win and gather important points in the Liga MX Clausura 2025 tournament.
The Diablos Rojos are coming off two consecutive victories against FC Juárez and Querétaro, contributing to a total of 22 goals this season, making them the league’s highest-scoring team.
Paulinho, who has scored six goals this season, stated, “The mentality must always be to win regardless of the last match against them. We are here to win for Toluca; the opponent does not matter.”
He stressed the contrast between regular season matches and playoff encounters, asserting that the stakes and pressures differ significantly. “Playoff games change dynamics; they are a different experience. What matters now is that we face a strong team in América,” Paulinho said.
Regarding his current position as a leading goal scorer, Paulinho clarified that individual accolades are not his focus. “For me, it is not important. The goal is to reach the playoffs and become champions with Toluca. Goals come from hard work, and I want to score in every game, but it is not something that consumes my mind,” he noted.
He further explained his adaptability to playing alongside fellow striker Robert Morales. “It’s different playing with two forwards, and I have adjusted well. The most important thing is the team, and I feel good about our chemistry,” he commented. He expressed confidence that the team is understanding coach Antonio Mohamed’s strategies better as they play together.
Looking ahead to the encounter against América, Paulinho acknowledged the challenge due to the short recovery period after midweek matches. “It is a factor; however, there is no use in wasting time thinking about it. We have to focus on the match ahead. Despite the rivalry, it ultimately remains a soccer game,” he asserted.
The match against América, part of Jornada 10, will see Toluca aiming to extend their winning streak and secure their status near the top of the league standings. Paulinho and his teammates are keen on maintaining their strong performance as they approach one of the season’s significant clashes.
