Tom Daley and Helen Glover to Lead Team GB as Flag Bearers in Paris Olympics
In an exciting announcement, Tom Daley and Helen Glover have been chosen to carry the British flag during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. This special event will take place on Friday, and the duo brings three Olympic gold medals to their historic roles.
Daley, who is known as the defending champion in the men’s 10m synchro diving event, has become the first diver to be honored as a flag bearer. On the other hand, Glover, a two-time gold medallist, follows in the footsteps of rower Moe Sbihi, who carried the flag in Tokyo.
Reflecting on this honor, Daley shared his heartfelt thoughts about his late father, Robert, who passed away from cancer. He expressed how his dad wouldn’t have believed that he would one day carry the flag, saying, “I think he would be so incredibly proud of me being a flag bearer of Team GB.”
Daley admitted that winning gold alongside Matty Lee at the Tokyo Olympics has allowed him to approach this upcoming competition with a healthier mindset, focusing on enjoying the experience rather than just chasing medals.
Helen Glover, who is set to compete in the women’s four in Paris, expressed her happiness by calling this moment “probably the biggest honour of my life.” Glover, who came out of retirement to pursue another Olympic dream, shared how privileged she feels to represent Team GB.
Both athletes were present at the British Ambassador’s residence in Paris when their flag bearer roles were announced by the British Olympic Association president, Princess Anne. Glover described the honor as something deeply meaningful, reflecting on her journey from retirement back to the Olympics.
Daley also expressed excitement about sharing this moment with Glover, calling her an inspiration. He spoke fondly about his children, focusing on how special it will be for them to look back on photos of this moment in history.
Both Daley and Glover faced challenges on their path back to the Olympics, with Glover being the first mother to row for Team GB after returning to the sport during the pandemic. Their journeys have been marked by determination and dreams coming to fruition.
With Daley’s long-standing Olympic presence and Glover’s inspiring comeback story, this year’s opening ceremony promises to be particularly emotional and memorable.
