Tom Watson Ryder Cup 2025

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Tom Watson, a two-time captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, expressed his disappointment and embarrassment over the behavior of American fans at Bethpage Black during the Ryder Cup 2025, which concluded on Sunday. Watson issued an apology on social media, congratulating Team Europe for their victory and condemning the rude and disrespectful actions of some American spectators.

“I’d like to congratulate @RyderCupEurope on their victory. Your team play the first few days was sensational,” Watson stated. “More importantly, I’d like to apologize for the rude and mean-spirited behavior from our American crowd at Bethpage. As a former player, captain, and as an American, I am ashamed of what happened.”

The match, which saw Team Europe claim a 15-13 victory, was marked by a series of incidents that drew criticism. Rory McIlroy was targeted heavily by the crowd, facing jeers and insults as he played. Reports indicate that he responded to the taunts at one point by gesturing towards the fans.

“I don’t mind them having a go at us. That’s to be expected,” McIlroy said. “But when they are still doing it while you are over the ball and trying to hit your shot, that’s difficult.” He emphasized the need for respect during play, urging fans to allow players the opportunity to focus on their game.

In an alarming incident, a beer was thrown at McIlroy’s wife, Erica Stoll, causing further outrage. Stoll narrowly avoided injury, as the can glanced off her hat. McIlroy voiced his concerns over the behavior, stating, “Golf should be held to a higher standard.” He called for improvements in how fans conduct themselves during such events.

In the aftermath of the match, increased security measures were implemented, including the presence of police officers on the course. Despite efforts to manage the crowd’s behavior, tensions remained high throughout the event.

Watson’s remarks join a chorus of disapproval from various players and commentators who have condemned the unsportsmanlike behavior witnessed at the tournament. As the Ryder Cup moves forward, the PGA of America will likely need to address these issues to ensure a more respectful environment for all participants in future events.
