Ajla Tomljanovic Australian Open 2025 Match

MELBOURNE, Australia — Ajla Tomljanovic, one of Australia’s last remaining hopes in the women’s singles draw, was eliminated from the Australian Open 2025 in the second round by Diana Schnaider on Wednesday. The 31-year-old crowd favorite fell 6-4, 7-5 at John Cain Arena, marking another early exit from her home tournament.

Tomljanovic, a wildcard entry, had advanced to the second round after a hard-fought victory over American Ashlyn Krueger in a three-set match. The win was particularly satisfying for Tomljanovic, who had lost to Krueger just nine days earlier in Adelaide. However, she was unable to overcome Schnaider, the 12th seed, who dominated in straight sets.

With her second-round exit, Tomljanovic will take home AUD$200,000 in prize money. Despite her consistent appearances at the Australian Open, she has yet to progress beyond the second round in her home tournament.

The 2025 Australian Open has seen a significant increase in prize money, with the men’s and women’s singles champions each set to earn AUD$3.5 million. The runners-up will receive AUD$1.9 million, reflecting the tournament’s growing financial stature. Since 2002, the total prize pool has more than quadrupled, rising from AUD$16.5 million to AUD$96.5 million in 2025.

Tomljanovic’s early exit leaves only two Australian women remaining in the draw, as the nation continues its search for a homegrown champion. Meanwhile, Schnaider advances to the third round, where she will face her next opponent in pursuit of the coveted title.
