Tommy Fleetwood Clinches Victory In Dubai Invitational With Birdie Birdie Finish

Tommy Fleetwood secured a thrilling victory in the Dubai Invitational with a sensational birdie-birdie finish, fending off strong challenges from Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence. As the final day unfolded at the Dubai Creek Resort, the Englishman held a slim one-shot lead with McIlroy closely behind, setting the stage for an exciting head-to-head battle.

While his competitors produced exhilarating performances, Fleetwood maintained a steady and consistent game throughout. However, a late bogey on the 16th hole caused him to fall behind for the first time in the tournament. With both Fleetwood and McIlroy birdying the 17th hole, they teed off on the final hole with Fleetwood trailing by one. But as McIlroy faltered and found the water, resulting in a bogey, Fleetwood seized the opportunity and sunk a remarkable 16-foot putt for a final round score of 67, claiming his seventh DP World Tour title.

South African golfer Thriston Lawrence finished alongside McIlroy at 18 under par, securing second place in the tournament, followed by Jordan Smith from England two strokes behind, and Francesco Molinari, the 2018 Open Champion, three strokes behind.

This triumph in the Dubai Invitational marks Fleetwood’s third victory in the United Arab Emirates, adding to his two wins in Abu Dhabi. It also comes after his impressive second-place finish at the previous season-ending DP World Tour Championship. This win elevates Fleetwood to the top of the International Swing Rankings, places him fourth in the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, and has the potential to boost his Official World Golf Ranking to 11th.

An ecstatic Fleetwood, who resides in Dubai, expressed his joy at the victory, stating, “I’m very happy. It was amazing winning. Like almost everybody else in the world of golf, I don’t win anywhere near as much as I would like to but just that winning feeling is great.” He added, “This is obviously where I live and have a lot of support. It’s great to kick off the year with a great result and push on from here.”

Reflecting on his performance, Fleetwood recognized the progress he has made and acknowledged the support he receives, saying, “I feel like I’ve been saying for a long time that I’ve been doing a lot of really great things. I have amazing people that I’m working with, win, lose or draw today. Next week will be the same. We just crack on and we keep pushing forward and hopefully keep moving in the right direction.”
