Tommy Paul, the American tennis player, achieved one of the most impressive comeback victories of the season at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday. paul’s dramatic win saw him overcome Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in a three-set battle that lasted two hours and 43 minutes, securing his place in the Round of 16.
Ranked 19th in the tournament, Paul initially appeared to be on the brink of defeat. Tabilo, the 11th seed, was poised for victory after taking the first set 7-6 with a tiebreak of 7-2 and leading 5-1 in the second set. The Chilean player had five match points, but Paul managed to save them, capitalizing on Tabilo’s errors and his own decisive play, including a crucial crosscourt backhand passing shot.
In the end, Paul turned the match around, winning 6-7, 7-6, 6-2. According to Infosys ATP Stats, Paul won 12 of the last 15 games and converted four out of 13 break points. His victory sets him up against either the 30th seed Tomas Machac or qualifier Aleksandar Vukic in the next round.
Following the match, fellow American player Frances Tiafoe praised Paul’s tenacity. Despite switching off from watching mid-match, Tiafoe was impressed by the comeback, stating, “Braveheart. I messaged him this morning, Braveheart, man.” He admitted he underestimated Paul and went to sleep before realizing the turnaround.
Meanwhile, the tournament faced weather disruptions, with heavy rains impacting the schedule for the third consecutive day. Matches were relocated to the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena’s indoor courts, with some rescheduled for later dates.
