Tony Finau Overcomes Injury to Finish Tenth at Masters Debut

Augusta, Georgia — Tony Finau made an impressive debut at the Masters in 2018, finishing tied for tenth despite dislocating his ankle just a day before the prestigious tournament. The American golfer suffered the injury during the traditional Par 3 Contest when he celebrated a stunning hole-in-one on the seventh hole.
The celebration took a turn for the worse when Finau slipped, resulting in a gruesome dislocation of his ankle. Remarkably, he quickly managed to pop his ankle back into place before seeking medical attention for an X-ray. Fortunately, there were no breaks detected, just a high ankle sprain, allowing him to participate in the tournament.
Following the incident, Finau took to social media to express his gratitude: “Crazy dat. Thanks for thoughts of concern, messages and prayers from all. I’m optimistic,” he wrote on X.
Finau went on to complete the tournament at seven-under-par, ending the event tied for tenth, eight shots behind the champion Patrick Reed, who won by a single shot. The golfer shared images of his injury on Instagram post-tournament, showcasing his bruised and swollen ankle as a result of the accident.
Since his Masters debut, Finau has competed in the tournament seven times, achieving his best finish in 2019 when he tied for fifth, just two shots behind the champion.
In subsequent appearances, he again finished tied for tenth in 2021. Notably, the 35-year-old has never missed the cut at Augusta National and aims to improve upon his performances this year in pursuit of his first major victory.
Despite having secured six wins on the PGA Tour, Finau, currently ranked 34th in the world, is still vying for a win at the Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship, or Open Championship. He is set to compete again this year, grouped with Thomas Detry and Maverick McNealy.
Golf enthusiasts can look forward to the Masters as the stars of the sport clash at Augusta Green. The anticipation grows as athletes showcase their skills and resilience on this iconic course.
