Tony Meola Heart Attack Recovery

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola is recovering from a heart attack he suffered Thursday, one day before his 56th birthday. Meola’s health scare has prompted him to urge the soccer community to prioritize regular medical check-ups.

The heart attack occurred just days after Meola successfully completed a four-mile run. “If I get one of you to go to the doctor and get a checkup, this was all worth it for me,” Meola said, as reported by Front Row Soccer. “I’m going to be fine in a week, but I should have been smarter.”

Meola underwent a 45-minute procedure following the heart attack and has been in recovery for 24 hours since. He reports feeling optimistic about his health, stating, “They tell me that in a week I will feel better than I ever have!”

The Kearny, New Jersey, native is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished players in U.S. soccer history. As the starting goalie for the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and a backup in 2002, Meola made 101 appearances for the national team, achieving 35 shutouts during his career.

In Major League Soccer (MLS), Meola played 11 seasons with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, Kansas City Wizards, and New York Red Bulls. His most notable achievements include being named the regular season MVP and MLS Cup MVP in 2000, as he led Kansas City to the MLS Cup title with 16 regular-season shutouts and five additional clean sheets in the playoffs.

After retiring from professional soccer, Meola transitioned to broadcasting, serving as an analyst for CBS Sports Golazo Network. He has also worked for SiriusXM FC and held various media roles, providing insight into the game he loves.

Meola’s recent health issue caught the attention of many in the soccer community, with best wishes pouring in from fans and former teammates. Soccer insider Tom Bogert shared, “He’s in good spirits and doctors say he’ll be okay. He thanks everyone for the birthday wishes too.” Meola’s message to his supporters is clear: “Go get frequent checkups.”
