Arkansas Baseball Team Vs Georgia Baseball Team

ATHENS, Ga. – Unanimous No. 1 Arkansas (31-3, 11-1 SEC) will face a formidable challenge this weekend as they head to Foley Field to face No. 7 Georgia (30-5, 8-4 SEC) in a three-game series. The series opener is set for 5 p.m. CDT on Friday, followed by Game 2 at 3 p.m. on Saturday, with the final game scheduled for Sunday at noon CDT.

Previously, Arkansas experienced a sweep at the hands of Georgia during their last meeting on the road in 2023. In fact, over the last 14 matchups, the two teams have evenly split their victories. Arkansas last emerged victorious in a series held in Athens in 2015, winning two out of three games.

The recent renovations at Foley Field included adding a turf surface, a significant change for both teams. Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn commented on the transition from grass to turf. “It is different, they had a beautiful grass surface the last time I was there. I was kind of surprised they went to turf with how nice it was. It is a different game when you play on turf,” he said. “The ball jumps on you as an infielder, the spin is drastically increased. Outfielders must be prepared to smother line drives and limit bounces. Singles can turn into triples quickly on turf.”

Both Arkansas and Georgia enter this matchup boasting two of the most potent offenses in the nation. Arkansas leads the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in every major hitting category, with a remarkable .361 batting average as a team. They have scored a total of 138 runs and launched 33 home runs in just 12 conference games. Meanwhile, Georgia has made headlines with their power hitting, leading the country with 92 home runs.

Arkansas’s consistency has been evident since the season’s start, according to Coach Van Horn. “We feel like we have been pretty consistent from day one. We don’t make a lot of mistakes. We throw the ball over the plate, and that is a good recipe for winning at any level,” he said. “Georgia can really score; no lead is safe.”

Georgia faced challenges last weekend against Texas, particularly when dealing with left-handed pitching. They struck out 38 times while managing only 15 hits. In contrast, Arkansas has maintained the same starting rotation for five consecutive series, with Zach Root set to pitch on Friday. Gabe Gaeckle will follow on Saturday, and Landon Beidelschies will take the mound on Sunday.

In contrast, Georgia coach Wes Johnson is shaking things up this weekend. The Bulldogs’ three starters have combined for just 11 starts this season, with Sunday starter Leighton Finley being responsible for seven. This season, Georgia’s starters have only reached the fifth inning or beyond six times.

For Arkansas, Zach Root has accomplished this milestone in six out of seven starts, further solidifying his importance on the mound. Razorback fans remember the disappointment of the 2018 season when the team fell short in the College World Series, yet optimism surrounds this year’s squad. Arkansas’s record of 30-3 mirrors that of the successful 2018 team, while the 2025 team has already set a record for the best start with wins over Arkansas State.

As Arkansas prepares for this series, it will serve as one of their toughest tests of the season. Wes Johnson, a native of Arkansas, has transformed Georgia into an elite program, incorporating strategies learned under Van Horn. “Georgia will play hard. They are athletic and like to hit. While the pitching may not be where Johnson wants it, they have guys that can get outs,” Van Horn added. If Arkansas can secure victory this weekend, questions surrounding the team’s capabilities will likely diminish.
