COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four-star quarterback Brady Smigiel, ESPN‘s No. 36 overall recruit in the 2026 class, has decommitted from Florida State, sources told ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Sunday. The decision comes after Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly visited Smigiel at his home on Saturday.

The 6-foot-5 Smigiel, ESPN’s fourth-ranked pocket passer in the 2026 recruiting cycle, initially committed to Florida State in June, choosing the Seminoles over several other top programs. His decommitment leaves Florida State with five commitments in the 2026 class, a significant blow to coach Mike Norvell‘s recruiting efforts.

Smigiel, a three-year starter at Newbury Park High School in California, led his team to a 14-1 record and a division title this past fall. In his junior season, he threw for 3,521 yards and 49 touchdowns, showcasing his strong arm and downfield accuracy. Over his first two high school campaigns, Smigiel amassed 7,701 passing yards and 98 touchdowns.

“Brady is one of the most talented quarterbacks in his class,” said a recruiting analyst. “His ability to read defenses and deliver accurate throws makes him a top target for any program.”

With Smigiel’s decommitment, Ohio State, along with other programs like Washington and others, are expected to heavily pursue the standout quarterback. Only eight of the 18 quarterbacks ranked in the 2026 ESPN 300 remain uncommitted, making Smigiel one of the most sought-after recruits in the nation.

Florida State’s 2026 class now features five commitments, led by ESPN 300 athletes ranked No. 112 and No. 244 overall. The Seminoles’ recent struggles in retaining commitments have raised questions about their recruiting strategy moving forward.
