Toronto Maple Leafs’ Dennis Hildeby to Make NHL Debut Against New Jersey Devils
The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to introduce a new face between the posts as goaltender Dennis Hildeby makes his NHL debut against the New Jersey Devils. Despite the high stakes of playing in New Jersey’s home opener, Maple Leafs Head Coach Craig Berube has expressed confidence in the 23-year-old’s abilities.
“He’s played well in pre-season,” stated Berube. “I really liked his game in Montreal in pre-season, so he’ll be in the net tonight.” Hildeby showcased his skills effectively during pre-season, notably halting 26 of 27 shots in his NHL pre-season start on September 28.
The decision to debut Hildeby comes as the team navigates injury concerns, with one of their usual netminders sidelined due to a lower-body issue. With the Leafs having played a match the previous night in Montreal, they were hesitant to start their other goaltender consecutively, leading to Hildeby’s call-up.
When discussing the decision to elevate Hildeby from the AHL, where he was an all-star last year, Berube cited it as a “management decision” to opt for him over a veteran goaltender. “You leave him alone, especially a goalie. He knows what he’s doing,” Berube commented concerning Hildeby’s debut. “He’s had some experience, not a lot, but he’s going to do his job, play his game.”
The towering 6-foot-7 Swedish netminder impressed many during his time at training camp. Significantly, fellow Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz commended Hildeby’s performance after Wednesday’s 1-0 loss in Montreal, “He was tremendous in pre-season. He has a nice calmness in his game and he moves extremely well for a guy of his size,” Stolarz mentioned.
Hildeby’s NHL debut is much anticipated following a remarkable season with the Leafs’ AHL affiliate. Sheldon Keefe, the former Leafs coach and current head coach of the Devils, acknowledged Hildeby’s potential. “He had a tremendous season last year in his first year in North America,” Keefe commented. Despite the challenge Hildeby poses, Keefe maintained his focus on ensuring his own team is equally prepared.
Hildeby, who was previously called up by the Leafs last season but did not play, now has the opportunity to showcase his talent on the NHL stage. As the Leafs prepare to face the Devils, all eyes will be on the rookie goaltender’s performance in this critical matchup.
