Toronto Maple Leafs' Morgan Rielly Faces Suspension After Defending Team's Honour

Toronto Maple Leafs‘ defenseman Morgan Rielly may be facing a suspension after a recent game against the Ottawa Senators where he took a stand to defend his team’s honor.

The incident occurred when Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig scored an empty-net goal, resulting in Rielly responding with a cross-check to Greig’s head. Rielly’s actions led to a hearing with the National Hockey League‘s Department of Player Safety, which was held virtually due to adverse weather conditions in New York.

While both teammates, Matthew Knies and Nick Robertson, acknowledged the likelihood of Rielly’s suspension, they commended his defense of the team’s respect. Knies emphasized the importance of Rielly standing up against disrespect, especially as a veteran figure on the team, to demonstrate the Leafs’ hard-nosed nature.

Rielly’s cross-check led to a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct, resulting in his removal from the game. The suspension’s duration remains uncertain, with predictions ranging from five to six games, as the DOPS considers the appropriate measures. Despite the impending absence of Rielly, the Leafs will face the St. Louis Blues as they initiate a three-game home stand.

Leafs’ head coach Sheldon Keefe acknowledged the process and anticipated outcome, noting that the team would adapt to the result accordingly. Rielly’s leadership and character were highlighted by Robertson, who viewed Rielly’s response as a demonstration of the team’s need to reclaim respect. While Rielly’s absence poses a challenge for the team, his leadership will continue to inspire and guide the Leafs during his suspension.

The incident prompted by Greig’s empty-net goal not only reflects Rielly’s allegiance to defending his team but also underscores the competitive spirit and intensity within the NHL. Greig, unharmed by Rielly’s actions, is expected to return to the Ottawa Senators’ lineup for their upcoming game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
