Toronto Maple Leafs Prepare for Season Opener with Goalie Joseph Woll
The Toronto Maple Leafs are gearing up for their NHL season opener against the Montreal Canadiens, with Joseph Woll expected to be the starting goaltender. The team has not officially announced the starting lineup, maintaining a strategic approach to their goalie selections.
During a media session on Tuesday, coach Craig Berube stated, “I never mentioned nothing,” when questioned about his plans for the goaltending position. Berube refrained from making any premature declarations, preferring to keep his decisions under wraps until necessary.
Joseph Woll expressed excitement at the prospect of playing at the Bell Centre in Montreal, describing it as “an historical building” that evokes excitement. This will not be Woll’s first time at the arena, as he previously competed there during the 2017 World Junior tournament.
Woll’s anticipated start in Montreal paves the way for Anthony Stolarz to potentially take the net for the game against the New Jersey Devils. Stolarz, who hails from Edison, New Jersey, shared his enthusiasm about playing in front of family and friends, many of whom are expected to be in attendance.
In addition to the roster updates, Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews emphasized the importance of staying present and focused on daily improvement. “Just staying present,” Matthews said. “We want to continue to build our games. We can’t think too far ahead. It’s about taking care of today.” Matthews is coming off a remarkable previous season where he scored a team-record 69 goals and secured his third Rocket Richard Trophy.
At the management level, discussions regarding Mitch Marner‘s contract extension remain on hold. General Manager Brad Treliving expressed confidence in Marner’s capabilities and preparation, stating, “Mitch is a star. He’s a great player. I couldn’t be more pleased with him during camp.” Marner’s performance and energy are seen as vital assets to the team’s success.
