Tottenham Clinches First Trophy in 17 Years at Europa League Final

BILBAO, Spain — Tottenham Hotspur has ended its 17-year trophy drought by winning the UEFA Europa League, securing a hard-fought victory against their opponents on May 21, 2025. The win marks Tottenham’s first major trophy since 2008 and the first European trophy since the UEFA Cup in 1984.
Brennan Johnson scored the only goal of the match in the first half, lifting the trophy under the leadership of Captain Son Heung-min. This victory also sends Spurs into the UEFA Super Cup, where they will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Internazionale in Udine, Italy, on August 13.
Spurs were the eighth English team to qualify for the Europa League final, with a record of six of the previous seven teams going on to win. Manager Ange Postecoglou emphasized the importance of this victory, stating that the team’s focus had been firmly on the Europa League since January, despite a rough domestic season.
After lifting the trophy, Son reflected on the achievement: “The feeling’s amazing, it’s what I always dreamed of. I felt the pressure of the trophy drought. It has finally happened so I can sleep easy!”
This year’s final was crucial for Manchester United as well; their defeat means they will not compete in European football next season after a disappointing Premier League performance. United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, acknowledged the challenges he faces following the loss, particularly with fans’ expectations running high.
The atmosphere in Bilbao was electric as Tottenham fans celebrated long into the night. The club’s resolve to change its fortunes this season, after years of near misses, proved successful as the players and fans rejoiced together.
