PERTH, Australia — The Australian Football League (AFL) community is in mourning following the death of Adam Selwood, 41, who passed away on Saturday. Adam, a prominent player for the West Coast Eagles, was known for his contributions on and off the field, playing 187 games and winning a premiership in 2006.

In a poignant statement released by his family, Adam’s wife, Fiona Selwood, expressed the family’s heartbreak. “Words cannot express the grief and sadness we feel,” she said. “Adam was a loving husband, and an incredible father to Lenny and Billie. We are devastated to lose such a wonderful husband, father, son, and brother.”

This loss comes just three months after Adam’s twin brother, Troy Selwood, died in February. During Troy’s funeral at Geelong‘s GMHBA Stadium, Adam paid tribute to his brother, describing him as “full of life, full of love, full of wisdom beyond his years.”

“Having an identical twin is both a rare privilege and wonderfully complex,” Adam said at the service. “He was my mirror, my fiercest competitor, my greatest ally.” Adam Selwood’s tragic passing is another blow to the Selwood family, who are now grieving the loss of two brothers in a short period.

Former West Coast coach Adam Simpson expressed his sorrow, stating, “I don’t know what to say. It breaks your heart.” The AFL community, including teams like Geelong and Collingwood, extended their condolences to the Selwood family during this difficult time.

Prior to his passing, Adam was involved in charity work, planning to run in the HBF Run for a Reason half-marathon, raising funds for Zero2Hero, an organization aimed at combating youth suicide in Western Australia. “This cause is deeply personal to me,” he wrote on his fundraising page before his death.

Selwood’s legacy in the AFL is secure, and he will be remembered not just for his athletic achievements but also for the kindness and joy he brought to those around him. His family is now asking for privacy as they navigate this tragic chapter in their lives.
