Trail Blazers Brace for Tough Matchup Against Cavaliers With Key Injuries

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Trail Blazers are preparing for a crucial matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday as they pursue their fifth consecutive victory in hopes of maintaining playoff contention in the Western Conference.
Currently, the Trail Blazers (27-33) face significant challenges as they navigate injuries within their roster. Forward Jerami Grant has been ruled out for the game due to soreness in his right knee, which already caused him to miss two games earlier this season. His absence will leave a void in the Blazers’ lineup, as Grant has contributed an average of 14.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while providing a strong defensive presence on the wing.
“Losing Grant is tough; he brings a lot of experience and defensive skill to the court,” said Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups. “We will have to adjust our game plan without him.”
Meanwhile, forward Deni Avdija is listed as questionable after sustaining a left quad injury during Wednesday’s game against the Washington Wizards. Avdija exited early in the first quarter during the Blazers’ 129-121 win but remains hopeful about participating in Sunday’s contest.
“I’m feeling better and really want to help the team against the Cavaliers,” Avdija said. “We’ve been on a roll, and I want to keep that momentum going.”
Both centers, Robert Williams III (out due to a left knee sprain) and Deandre Ayton, are also unavailable, leaving the Blazers with rookie center Donovan Clingan expected to step up against a formidable Cavaliers frontcourt. Clingan, who has seen limited game time, faces a challenging matchup against Cleveland’s bigger players.
The Cavaliers (39-19) themselves will be missing star guard Donovan Mitchell for their matchup against the Blazers. His absence could open opportunities for Portland to capitalize and attempt to secure a crucial road victory.
Despite the team’s recent struggles, Avdija believes in the Blazers’ resilience. “We’ve found ways to win despite the injuries,” Avdija said. “Each game is a new chance, and we need to take advantage of it.”
The Blazers’ recent success has created belief within the team that they can compete among the best. They have won six of their last 10 games, staying alive in the playoff race in the West.
With game day fast approaching, fans await updates on Avdija’s status and potential last-minute decisions that could influence the game strategy. As the Blazers face the Cavaliers, all eyes will be on how the team adjusts to their shorthanded roster against one of the leading teams in the Eastern Conference.
