Trail Blazers Honor Bill Walton with Special Tribute Night

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Trail Blazers will honor Hall of Fame player Bill Walton during a special Tribute Night on March 9 when they face the Detroit Pistons. The event commemorates Walton’s remarkable legacy and contributions to the team.
Fans attending the game are encouraged to wear tie-dye, reflecting Walton’s iconic style. Game attendees will receive a complimentary tie-dye headband and can expect a variety of tributes throughout the night, including in-game videos celebrating Walton’s impactful career.
“This tribute is a heartfelt celebration of Bill’s life and legacy—not just as a player but as an inspiration to many,” said Todd Bosma, Director of Game Operations for the Trail Blazers. “We’re excited to have members of his family and alumni from the 1977 Championship team joining us.”
Walton, who passed away last spring at the age of 71 after a battle with colon cancer, is remembered for his exceptional skill as a big man and for leading the Trail Blazers to their only championship in 1977. His career averages with the Blazers include 17.1 points, 13.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game, making him one of the franchise’s most celebrated players.
The tribute game will also feature a performance by a Grateful Dead tribute band, highlighting Walton’s long-standing connection with the iconic band, which he often credited as a significant influence in his life.
As the Blazers prepare for the tribute night, they are looking to rebound after a challenging start to March, with a current record of 1-3 over their last four games. Walton’s legacy as a transformative player will be at the forefront as the Blazers look to spark their performance against the Pistons.
Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 PM Eastern Time. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to partake in the festivities honoring one of the franchise’s all-time greats.
