PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Trail Blazers have announced a multi-year contract extension for General Manager Joe Cronin as the team closes out its 2024-25 season with a promising turnaround. This decision comes after a season marked by a 35-44 record, representing a 14-win improvement from last year’s struggles.

The announcement, made Monday, highlighted the Blazers’ improvement following a challenging start, where they posted a dismal 13-28 record in their first 41 games. Since January 19, the Blazers have shown remarkable progress, going 22-16 while ranking among the top five in defensive efficiency, according to ESPN research.

“Joe has demonstrated leadership and vision during his time as general manager, and I’m excited to see him continue building the foundation for a long-term, winning team,” said Trail Blazers Chair Jody Allen in a statement. “We are all thrilled with the team’s forward momentum and excited for the future of Trail Blazers basketball.”

Cronin was first promoted to the general manager position in May 2022 after serving as interim GM following Neil Olshey‘s dismissal in December 2021. Prior to that, Cronin held various roles within the organization, including assistant general manager and director of player personnel. He has been with the Blazers for more than 19 years since joining as an intern in 2006.

Under Cronin’s leadership, the Blazers have transitioned from the Damian Lillard era, making significant roster adjustments. Key moves include bringing in players like Jerami Grant, Deni Avdija, and Toumani Camara through trades and the draft. Avdija, acquired from the Washington Wizards, has emerged as a standout, averaging 16.9 points per game this season, with impressive recent performances.

“I’m honored that Jody and [Trail Blazers Vice Chair Bert Kolde] have put their continued trust in me,” Cronin said. “My vision is to have a competitive roster with the potential for sustained success, while creating a culture that helps all our players, coaches, and staff thrive. I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come.”

This contract extension marks an important step for Cronin as he aims to lead the team through another challenging offseason while maintaining the momentum built over the past several months. As the Blazers prepare for the 2025 NBA Draft, Cronin will need to make strategic decisions that could further influence the team’s development and future success.
