Transformational Grant Secured for Cairo-Grady County Boys & Girls Club
The Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club (JRBGC) in Cairo-Grady County is set to undergo a significant transformation following the approval of a substantial grant worth $850,000.
Known as ‘Project Homerun,’ the grant was recently given the green light by the House of Representatives on March 7th, passed by the Senate on March 8th, and officially signed into law by the President on March 9th.
Among the numerous proposals vying for funding, ‘Project Homerun’ was selected as one of the 15 community projects set to benefit from the grant, paving the way for a new era of opportunities and resources for the youth served by the JRBGC.
The JRBGC, which receives partial funding from the federal government and operates as a tax-exempt entity, sustains its activities through a combination of membership fees, individual donations, and fundraising initiatives orchestrated by the board members.
The expansion initiative entails the construction of an indoor gymnasium along with additional classroom spaces, addressing the pressing need for more room as the club has outgrown its current premises due to space constraints.
Expressing gratitude for the backing received, JRBGC Board Chair Donica Douglas emphasized the appropriateness of the grant funds, highlighting the club’s longstanding goal of expanding to a secondary location in order to cater to a larger number of local youth, a dream previously hindered by flooding concerns.
Local community leaders rallied behind the grant proposal, voicing their support through letters of endorsement, underscoring the collaborative efforts that culminated in the realization of ‘Project Homerun’ for the JRBGC.
Executive Director Stephen Francis lauded the instrumental role played by Congressman Bishop and his team in seeing the project through, acknowledging their pivotal contribution to making the expansion plans a tangible reality for the club.
