NJ Transit Train Operator Killed, 23 Injured After Train Strikes Fallen Tree in Burlington County
A tragic incident occurred on Monday morning in Mansfield Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, resulting in the death of a New Jersey Transit train operator and injuries to 23 passengers. The accident happened when a River Line train, traveling south from Trenton, struck a fallen tree on the tracks near the Roebling Station around 6:00 a.m.
According to New Jersey Transit, the train had 42 individuals on board at the time of the crash. The impact caused significant damage, with the tree partially lodged beneath the front car of the train and its window shattered. The train operator was fatally injured in the collision.
The injured passengers, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, were treated at the scene. Many of the injuries were described as minor, although some passengers reported being visibly distressed and some sustained open wounds.
New Jersey Transit police and emergency crews responded quickly to the scene. An investigation has been launched to determine how the tree fragment ended up on the tracks while the train was in operation. Governor Phil Murphy confirmed on social media that he had received updates on the incident and that an inquiry was underway.
Following the accident, River Line service was suspended in both directions between Florence and Trenton, with substitute bus services provided for commuters. The incident is the latest in a series of challenges faced by New Jersey Transit, which has struggled with infrastructure issues and service reliability, particularly during the spring and summer months.
