Trent Alexander-Arnold to Leave Liverpool for Real Madrid Amid Contract Talks

LIVERPOOL, England — Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool‘s vice-captain, has decided to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Alexander-Arnold revealed his decision to Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, during a meeting in March after recovering from an ankle injury. The right-back expressed a desire to step out of his comfort zone and seek a new challenge, signaling that he would not renew his contract with the club he joined at age six.
“You’re a huge part of this team and let’s end it on a high together,” Slot told Alexander-Arnold, who is currently focused on helping his team secure the Premier League title.
Despite his decision to leave, Alexander-Arnold reassured Slot, saying, “My mindset and commitment won’t change. I’ll continue to give everything for this club until the final day.”
Liverpool confirmed this week that Alexander-Arnold’s representative had informed sporting director Richard Hughes of his decision not to sign a new contract. The club was not surprised, as discussions about an extension had stalled earlier in March.
After celebrating the Premier League title win against Tottenham last week, Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid next season. Although he has not officially confirmed the move, sources close to the situation suggest a deal is in place.
A 20-year association with Liverpool will end for Alexander-Arnold, who has made over 350 appearances for the club, winning the Champions League and two Premier League titles, among other honors. Privately, he has wrestled with the decision but feels it is time for a new environment.
Real Madrid’s interest in the player has grown, particularly following the injury to their regular right-back, Dani Carvajal. The Spanish club sees Alexander-Arnold as a crucial long-term addition.
As Alexander-Arnold prepares for his departure, he reflects on his achievements at Liverpool, stating, “Look, I have been at the club 20 years now. I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public. This one won’t be either.”
His decision to leave comes despite Liverpool’s efforts to keep him, including an offer that would have made him one of the highest-paid full-backs in the world. Ultimately, the desire for a new challenge has prevailed for Alexander-Arnold.
In the wake of his impending transfer, Alexander-Arnold received a warm acknowledgment from Liverpool’s principal owner, John W. Henry, who expressed gratitude for his contributions to the club. “You’ve been an amazing player for this team and I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve given to this club,” Henry said.
