NEW YORK CITY — The Tri-State Area is bracing for a series of winter storms expected to impact the region this week, starting with a significant snowfall on Tuesday evening through early Wednesday morning. Authorities warn that residents should prepare for a mix of snow, sleet, and ice.
The first storm is anticipated to blanket New York City with about 1 to 3 inches of snow Tuesday night, while Long Island could see up to 4 inches in some areas, especially on the South Shore. Snowfall totals will be heaviest in Ocean County, New Jersey, where accumulations may reach 5 inches, particularly in Southern Jersey areas, as a Winter Storm Warning is in effect. The National Weather Service said snowfall will begin after the evening commute, minimizing travel disruptions.
According to forecasts, temperatures are expected to remain at or below freezing, ensuring that all precipitation falls as snow and sticks on contact, unlike future storms this week which will involve mixed precipitation. “People traveling late Tuesday night should proceed with caution as roads will be slick and visibility may be reduced,” warned a spokesperson from the National Weather Service.
Following this storm, another weather system will develop on Wednesday night into Thursday, bringing mixed precipitation that will likely disrupt commutes. While areas in higher elevations like the Catskills may receive light snow, lower elevations are expected to see a rain-snow mix that will transition predominantly to rain.
The second storm could create challenges for Wednesday’s evening commute and Thursday morning, particularly in the New York City area where rain could complicate conditions. “Snow accumulation will be light in many areas, with less than an inch predicted for most of New Jersey and Connecticut,” said meteorologist Mike Woods.
Moreover, a third storm system is projected to strike the region over the weekend, which may deliver more rain than snow. Forecasts predict that temperatures in the city could rise above freezing, turning any lingering wintry precipitation into rain. This storm could bring considerable rainfall, raising flood concerns as well.
New Yorkers are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and to take safety precautions when driving in the anticipated wintry conditions. The city’s Department of Sanitation is prepared for the expected snowfall with thousands of workers deployed to treat roads and clear sidewalks in compliance with city regulations.
“We urge the public to remain vigilant and heed any winter weather advisories,” said an official from the NYC Emergency Management. “Icy conditions can pose risks even after treatment, so extra patience is required during commutes.”
