Trincao Secures Portugal’s Extra Time Advantage Against Denmark

LISBON, Portugal (March 23, 2025) — Francisco Trincao scored a late goal to guide Portugal into extra time in their UEFA Nations League quarterfinal match against Denmark at the Estádio José Alvalade.
With just minutes remaining in regular time, Trincao found the net, bringing the score to 3-2, crucially forcing the extension. Portugal had been trailing after Denmark’s Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring in the first half.
Portugal entered the match determined to overcome a disappointing 1-0 loss in the first leg in Copenhagen. Coach Roberto Martínez emphasized the need for a strong performance, acknowledging the previous defeat as the team’s worst in two years.
“We have 90 minutes to turn this around. Let’s give it our all,” Cristiano Ronaldo stated in the lead-up to the match, underscoring the team’s collective resolve.
Despite trailing, Portugal controlled the midfield with key contributions from Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, and Bernardo Silva. The team aimed to exploit the wings, relying on the pace of AC Milan’s Rafael Leao.
Denmark, guided by Brian Riemer, sought to capitalize on its previous success against Portugal. Riemer highlighted the importance of improving their shooting accuracy, as Denmark faced a revamped Portuguese side that needed a win to advance.
“We’re preparing for a tough match. Portugal will bring their best game, and we have to be ready for that,” Riemer commented.
Both teams made tactical changes as the game progressed. In particular, Portugal’s substitutions, including bringing on Rúben Neves and Diogo Jota, aimed at intensifying their attacking threat. Meanwhile, Denmark substituted their captain, Christian Eriksen, who had previously missed a penalty.
As match officials indicated four minutes of stoppage time, Denmark ramped up its pressure but Portugal’s defense, led by Rúben Dias, held firm. In the dying moments, Ronaldo’s potential goal was disallowed due to an offside call.
The intensity remained high throughout the match, highlighted by several yellow cards issued to players from both sides, including Danish defender Mathias Jensen and Portugal’s Diogo Jota.
The approaching extra time promises to deliver a thrilling climax to this closely contested quarterfinal, where Portugal will seek to finish strong in front of their home crowd.
Next, both teams will regroup for the extra time period, each striving to secure a place in the semifinals of the tournament.
