Troy High’s Harper Whetstine Signs with Northern Iowa for Basketball
(TROY, KS) – On Wednesday, Troy High School celebrated National Signing Day as senior Harper Whetstine committed to play Division 1 basketball for the Northern Iowa Panthers in Cedar Falls.
Whetstine, a standout player, averaged 25.7 points per game during her junior season. Her incredible performance also included 6.4 steals per game, earning her the title of Defensive Player of the Year and recognition in the 1A-I Player of the Year voting.
In her junior year, she achieved the impressive milestone of 1,000 career points and broke the Troy High record by scoring 43 points in a single game. Her efforts helped lead the Trojans to a third-place finish in the 1A championship, the highest in the school’s history, with an overall record of 23-2.
“I’m so excited to go on to the next level. As soon as I got there (at Northern Iowa), I knew that was it. The community, the people, the atmosphere, it was just amazing,” Whetstine said of her decision. “I just hope to be a good teammate for others. I might not do as much as I do here, but I still hope to have a role on the team.”
Troy head basketball coach Derek Jasper reflected on Whetstine’s impact: “This is our first Division I basketball signee at this school and what a great year she had. A magical year with all the school records she broke.”
Jasper added, “(Northern Iowa) is getting somebody in Harper who’s ready to go right away. She’s a combo guard who can really handle the ball and shoot well. Additionally, she’s a great passer and an all-around guard.”
Whetstine and her teammates will kick off their basketball practice for the season next week on Monday, November 17th.
